How Unic and Electrolux Professional Group are brewing a greener future
As featured in Global Coffee Report Magazine, May–June 2025 issue
In a world increasingly focused on sustainability, Electrolux Professional Group is setting a bold example, committed to achieving climate neutrality by 2030—a goal that involves balancing greenhouse gas emissions with removals across its operations in 110 countries.
“At Electrolux Professional Group, we want to do our part to improve society and generate value for our stakeholders,” says Swapnil Choudhari, VP Sustainability & Quality. “We have considered the external challenges the world is facing and assessed what we can do to help overcome these hurdles.”
Six Goals for a Sustainable Future
To guide its journey, the company has adopted six Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on clean energy, climate action, decent work, responsible consumption, clean water, and gender equality. These goals are not just aspirational—they’re actionable.
“These SDGs guide our sustainability strategy. This goes hand in hand with our company mission to make our customers’ work life easier, more profitable, and truly sustainable,” Choudhari adds.
Espresso Machines with a Mission
Unic, the group’s commercial espresso machine brand, is leading the charge with its Tango XP Duo. This super-automatic machine is 42 kilograms lighter than its predecessor, thanks to smart design and material choices.
“We start by thinking how we can produce a product in a better way and reduce its energy consumption,” says Jeremy Coquille, Unic’s R&D Manager. “Creating a machine that’s highly recyclable is fundamental – we no longer use a material that cannot be recycled.”
Modular Design for Maximum Efficiency
Unic’s modular approach allows for easy maintenance and part replacement, reducing waste and extending product life.
“Our approach allows for easy machine repairability, enabling specific components to be replaced individually in the event of a failure,” Coquille explains. “This means other components within the same module can still be reused.”
The boiler module, for instance, is smaller and more energy-efficient. Future models will even include AI systems to optimize energy use based on usage patterns.
A Circular Economy in Action
Unic’s sustainability efforts extend beyond manufacturing. In partnership with Cafés Richard, a leading French coffee roaster, Unic acts as subcontractor in the reconditioning program of their Tango super automatic machines.
“By choosing reconditioned equipment, customers are working alongside Cafés Richard in a shared circular economy approach to achieve more sustainable growth,” says Eric Duriez, Purchasing Director at Cafés Richard.
The reconditioning process includes collection, repair, quality control, and reinstallation—complete with cleaning tutorials and accessories.
Electrolux Professional Group and Unic are proving that sustainability and innovation can go hand in hand. From energy-efficient design to circular economy partnerships, their efforts are setting a new standard for the coffee equipment industry. As the world demands more responsible practices, Unic is showing that every cup of coffee can be a step toward a greener future.
